A few autumns ago, a customer named Margaret walked into our small
Dublin atelier and said:
"Fiona, I need ONE coat. Not five. One I can throw over jeans, a
dress, tailored trousers — and it just works. Without looking like
I'm trying."
Caoimhe and I sat down at the cutting table.
What we made for her is the Niamh. A classic trench cut with a softer
modern line — fitted just enough through the waist to flatter without
clinging, with a back tab that gives shape to the silhouette without
a belt. Single-breasted, classic notched lapels, real flap pockets,
and a fluid lightweight fabric that drapes properly the moment you
put it on.
It works over a midi dress for an afternoon wedding. It works over
jeans and a white t-shirt on a Tuesday. It works thrown over your
shoulders walking out of a wine bar.
